Gardening Tips for March from Kilmurrays Hardware Spring is in the air, and what better way to enjoy the warmer weather than getting out into the garden?
Here at Kilmurrays Hardware in Mullingar, we know how to make the most of the Irish climate and make your garden look its best. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you get your gardening season off to a great start.
1. Start with a soil test. Before you start any planting, it’s important to check the pH balance and nutrient levels of your soil. This will help you identify any potential plant or soil issues, and give you a better idea of what plants are best suited to your soil.
2. Prune and trim. Prune back any dead or overgrown branches, and trim hedges and shrubs to keep them neat and tidy. Now is also a great time to plant new trees, shrubs and hedges.
3. Plant bulbs. Time to get planting – March is the ideal time to start planting spring bulbs like daffodils, tulips and crocuses. Make sure to choose a sunny spot and add a layer of compost to ensure the best results.
4. Start a veggie patch. If you’re keen to grow your own veggies, now is the time to start preparing your veggie patch. If you’re a beginner, try starting off with some easy–to–grow vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes and carrots.
5. Get mulching. Mulching is great for keeping weeds at bay and keeping your soil moist. Try using a mix of bark chips, compost and well–rotted manure for best results.
